Masane Amaha is a woman on the fringe of society, bouncing rootless from town to town with her daughter, Rihoko. She struggles to build a life for her family, with no memory of the past and no clue as to what the future holds. But upon their arrival back in Tokyo forces conspire to separate parent from child, unleashing the fury of the Witchblade. The young mother will find herself conscripted into the service of the Doji Group and hunted down by the emissaries of the NSWF, all while seeking to balance the weight of this forced duality.

What is it with Anime? You’ll never find Japanese women dressed like this (much less any other nationality!) – and every chick in this Anime would give a Victoria’s Secret model an inferiority complex. To quote the old joke, their breasts enter the room five minutes before the rest of them. Not to wax prosaic on the subject, but it more boob driven than character driven. Just look at the case cover!

The animation is great, her physical reaction to death and violence is unique, and the resolution is fantastic. Top notch audio as well.

You get three BluRay discs – each episode is around 18 minutes long. A definite must-buy for Anime fans, it’s not nearly as sexist (or sexy) as many other titles. For the most part it really is character and plot driven. The alter ego Witchblade personality only appears for a few minutes per episode.

Withcblade anime – S. Williams –
I have been trying to catch this entire series for years on showtime, but was never able to. THis blu-ray did not only that but had several extras that I enjoyed. There is some fan service in the series and some action, but it is mostly about the characters.

Great anime – MajinVivi0 –
To be honest I thought this anime was going to be nothing but fanservice, of course that would not of stop me from liking it. I was pleasantly surprised that the story was pretty good and had quite a lot of humor. The series was quite enjoyable.

I really love this story and am especially a fan of Robert Zemeckis and his work. I find it hard to believe that some people were turned off by A Christmas Carol, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. I found there to be equal amounts of adults and children in the theater when I went to see this film. Couples ranging from late teens to middle age were there and laughing along with the kids. It was a lot of fun and I plan to purchase the Blu Ray when it’s available. I was a fan of The Polar Express and I’m a sucker for motion capture animation. I’ll rank this movie along with the Polar Express as one of my top classic Christmas movies. The Polar Express (Widescreen Edition)

Disappointed in no BluRay 3D – B. Brierly –
I always buy, what I think are special movies, in BluRay. I would like it in 3D but this is only offered in 2D. You have to buy the other set with theater type 3D plus new equipment to see it in 3D. I think that is a rip. Companies are always pushing new technology onto the public before their current technology is worn out. In this economy who has 3 to 4 thousand dollars to upgrade their equipment when they already have BluRay and HD hardware. Rich people I suppose. With a large chunk of the country out of work who do they think can buy the new hardware. The price of the BluRay sets aren’t that much different but is the cost of the hardware for the BluRay 3D set that makes it impossible. I don’t know who to fault for this, Disney, or the companies making the special 3D hardware. I don’t think this is going to be a profit maker for anyone. They should transition by offering a regular 3D in the set too for those of us that can’t afford new and expensive 3D equipment. I would rate the movie itself 5 stars but I rated the BluRays low becuae they don’t consider the common consumer with limited funds.

Do you think it’s any coincidence that the star, Jim Carrey, originally came from Canada, the home of Socialized medicine? Clint Eastwood is a living legend who is still just as popular today as he was 50 years ago, with films he’s directed and/or starred in that have frequently received much acclaim from critics and fans alike.

To celebrate Mr. Eastwood’s legacy, Warner Brothers, the studio Clint has worked with the most in Hollywood, released a career spanning DVD box set entitled: Clint Eastwood: 35 Films 35 Years at Warner Bros.. What a lot fans wanted to know was “What about Blu-Ray?” Warner Brothers has responded with this 10 disc Blu-Ray collection, which picks some of the actor’s best efforts along with a couple of wonderful films he did not star in, but directed.

Gran Torino (2008) 116 min Rated R – the story of Walt Kowalksi, a man who has recently lost his wife and befriends a young Vietnamese boy, who he teaches to become a man. This is currently Eastwood’s last performance on screen, and easily one of his finest. The disc is exactly the same as the previous stand alone release. Extras include a nice 20 minute segment entitled “The Eastwood Way” which focuses on Clint’s filmmaking process, along with 2 other featurettes: “Manning the Wheel” & “Gran Tornino: More Than a Car,” which are okay, but not as much fun as the other one. Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) 140 min Rated R – WWII as shown through the eyes of Japanese soldiers. This is considered the companion film to Eastwood’s other epic WWII movie, Flags of Our Fathers and was shot using original Japanese dialogue with English subtitles. The Blu-ray includes a number of bonus features, including “Red Sun, Black Sand: The Making of Letters from Iwo Jima,” a fascinating account of how the film was made, as well as a number of other interesting featurettes such as “The Faces of Combat,” which focuses on the cast of the film, “Images From the Frontlines,” which highlights the photography of the film, as well as the World Premiere coverage of the film from Budo-kan in Tokyo and the original press conference footage in 2006. Morgan Freeman rounds out the outstanding performances in this Best Picture Oscar winner. Extras include the James Lipton Roundtable interview with all three actors, a discussion segment with boxer turned actress, Lucia Rijker, entitled “Born To Fight,” and a behind the scenes featurette with the producers. Mystic River (2003) 138 min Rated R – Eastwood directs this story of three friends from Boston (Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, & Kevin Bacon) who reunite years later due to a past crime and a current death. Extras include an audio commentary track with Tim Robbins & Kevin Bacon, the Charlie Rose interviews with Clint Eastwood, Tim Robbins & Kevin Bacon, the featurette entitled “Mystic River: From Page to Screen” which chronicles bringing the book to life on film, and author Dennis Lehane tours the original Boston neighborhood for which his book is based on. Dirty Harry (1971) 102 min Rated R – Eastwood’s first starring film with Warner Brothers, as Detective “Dirty” Harry Calahan, a cop, who plays by his own rules, that’s out to stop a psychopath known as Scorpio (played perfectly by Andy Robinson) from murdering helpless victims. A true classic in every sense of the word. Extras include an audio commentary with Eastwood biographer Richard Schilckel, 2 featurettes, “Dirty Harry’s Way,” & “Dirty Harry: The Original, an interview gallery, along with 3 documentaries: “The Long Shadow of Dirty Harry,” Clint Eastwood: The Man From Malpaso, & “Clint Eastwood: Out of The Shadows.” The original theatrical trailer is included along with trailers to all 4 Dirty Harry sequels. Kelly’s Heroes (1970) 143 min Rated PG (originally released by MGM)- A team of US soldiers, headed by Eastwood’s Kelly, attempt to go behind enemy lines, in Nazi run Germany, to seize the fuhrer’s gold treasure. A classic ensemble cast motion picture, with Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carrol O’Connor, and Donald Sutherland in a scene stealing performance. The original theatrical trailer is included. Where Eagles Dare (1968) 155 min Rated PG (originally released by MGM)- Another WWII tour de force, directed by Brian Hutton (Kelly’s Heroes) with Eastwood teaming up with Richard Burton to rescue a US general from behind enemy lines in Germany. But is that really the whole plan? Extras include the vintage featurette “On Location: Where Eagles Dare,” and the original theatrical trailer. I really enjoyed this set of Eastwood films all together in one collection. The picture quality was quite good, especially on the newer releases. Some fans may be disappointed by the older Blu-ray releases on this set, like “Unforgiven,” which weren’t given better picture & audio upgrades like the later Blu-rays with their True-HD Master Audio tracks.

I was a little disappointed that some of the special features were missing too, like the vintage featurette from “The Rookie,” and the trailers to “Absolute Power” & “Million Dollar Baby.” It was nice to have “Letters from Iwo Jima” included with this set, but disappointing that “Flags of Our Fathers” was not also included, as the two films go perfectly together. I love “Dirty Harry,” as most Eastwood fans do, but it has already been previously released on Blu-ray 4 times. Surely another classic like “The Outlaw Josey Wales,” or “Heartbreak Ridge” could have been included instead.

All in all, the films are good and the quality is good enough, but still could have been better. I sincerely hope that this box set collection sells well enough for Warner Brothers to warrant coming out with a “Volume 2″ and subsequent future volumes after that, so we can have all of Clint’s WB films in a 5 box sets collection instead of having to buy them all individually. For what you pay, this is a pretty good deal. Check it out. You’ll be glad you did.

Why does this not include flags of our fathers but does contain letters from iwo jima? What a load of bs. This sampling of films is best geared toward old ladies and america-hating liberal douches. Makes Clint look like some sort of apologetic sellout.

After King Charles I is deposed, Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell become divided and bitter enemies over their actions.

I read so many negative reviews about the movie; I wasn’t going to buy it. When I found the Blu-Ray edition selling for .96 at Wal-Mart, I couldn’t pass it up. I definitely recommend Blu-Ray. I would have given it 5 stars but the dialogue is a little muddled.

The movie explores the development of our notions about “Authority” and “Legitimacy”. The movie suggests that the current thinking was that the authority to rule comes from God and not the people. The Divine Right of Kings was an integral part of religious views. To challenge the notion of Divine Right would be to challenge the core religious beliefs of society. In the movie, Sir Thomas Fairfax and his wife Lady Anne believe in the Divine Right of Kings. Thomas, however, believes that the King should be removed from power where as his wife (and all her family) did not. The general thinking in England sided with Thomas. Oliver Cromwell believed that the authority to rule came from the people, and, wanted to see the monarchy eliminated. He believed that the Divine Right of Kings was just an excuse to control, oppress and dominate.

The movie primarily focuses on Sir Thomas Fairfax and his efforts to maintain his relationships to both his wife and to Cromwell despite their differences. Cromwell’s treatment of the King and the King’s eventual trial and beheading, completely severs the relationship between Fairfax and Cromwell.

The representation of the period as will as the Cinematography is excellent. This is a drama and not an action movie. Remember, the historical events and their outcomes are already well known.

As an American, of course “Authority” and “Legitimacy” come from the people: how could it be any other way? But then, there was a time when Europe thought the contrary.

An Interesting Film, Despite Its Pacing – Daniel R. Sanderman – Portland, OR United States
TO KILL A KING is an interesting film about a troubled relationship between two powerful men. I agree with those reviewers who highlight this aspect of the film because it truly is more of a character piece than a historical drama. My only problem with the film is its pacing. It drags in places and urges one to shut it off. But don’t. It’s definitely worth a watch.

Worth it – Jo –
I picked up “To Kill A King” at a movie rental place one night when I was just browsing (as usual) for something more than the action/crude comedy/horror that so often lines the shelves of the new releases. The store had only one or two copies of this one and so I thought I’d take a look. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Since that night, I purchased the DVD for my own collection and have shared it with a few people who all liked it as well. I’ve watched it several times since I bought it and will watch again I’m sure. It’s not often that I want to see any movie more than once or twice in a year but this one is definitely worth it, I think.

Darkly handsome and absorbing historical film – David A. Greene – N. Huntingdon, PA (USA)
A friend, whose taste I respect, recommended “To Kill a King”. As I generally favor such historical film fare, I was quick to order a copy. Some internet research suggested that reaction to the film by viewers and critics was split, with a lot of comments about the fictionalized moments in the script. I wish I knew a bit more about the precise facts of the Reformation Period in England in order to correctly determine the truth of such events as the saving of Cromwell’s life by his friend, Fairfax which is so much in dispute here. All the same, I was pleased to find this picture to be a mature, thoughtful and absorbing piece. The stark, atmospheric lighting and cinematography, literate dialogue, convincing performances by the cast, etc…… all contributed to a thoroughly engrossing and satisfying film. A viewing of the very interesting, if imperfect, earlier movie, “Cromwell”, starring Richard Harris in the lead role, makes it very clear that this newer dramatization approaches the character of Oliver Cromwell with a radically altered bias. From what I have read and heard in the past, this leader of The Roundheads was controversial from the moment he emerged on history’s stage, and remains the subject of many arguments about his heroism, or lack thereof, and his contribution to the way England was governed. Most seem to concur that he was a stern and rigid fellow, who believed unwaveringly in his own moral perspective, and could be ruthless and brutal with those he opposed. “To Kill a King” is the kind of intelligent adult drama that is too scarce these days and it stimulates a great deal of interest in its subject and the questions raised by that enormous upheaval in British history.

In Lakeview Terrace, a young couple (Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington) has just moved into their California dream home when they become the target of their next-door neighbor, who disapproves of their interracial relationship. A stern, single father, this tightly wound LAPD officer (Samuel L. Jackson) has appointed himself the watchdog of the neighborhood. His nightly foot patrols and overly watchful eyes bring comfort to some, but he becomes increasingly harassing to the newlyweds. These persistent intrusions into their lives ultimately turn tragic when the couple decides to fight back.

This film is definately a must see, it embodies an exceptional plot wherein Samuel Jackson fits perfectly, given the fact that Jackson plays a Police Officer with a slight twist, and Jackson plays this twist with extraordinary finesse. The plot is somewhat complicated, and therefore leaves the viewer with a sense of “tension”, and that tension becomes intense as the excpetional musical score and turns in the plot unfold. Take note that the film also deals with today’s psychological and sociological issues, adding a certain appeal for some. Let the reader understand that this may not be a film for children.

racially charged and rather predictable, but the strong performances make it worth a look . . . – trebe –
Versatile Samuel L. Jackson, is almost always worth watching, in anything he appears in. In Lakeview Terrace (2008), Jackson is Abel Turner, a LAPD police officer, who has some issues with his new neighbors, who happen to be an interracial couple. New to the neighborhood are Lisa Mattson (Kerry Washington), who is African American, and from Oakland, and her husband Chris (Patrick Wilson), who is from Chicago, and is white. Unfortunately, there will be trouble between these neighbors. But how extreme will it get?

Able Turner is a man with some prejudices, and as a cop and single father of two, he has concerns about neighborhood security, and who is living next door. The Mattson’s are just trying to settle in as smoothly as possible, but being observed cavorting naked in their pool, by Able and his kids, creates some unintended waves.

Turner’s security floodlights, aimed into their windows are a small bother, and Chris tries to be reasonable, and talk things out. He is shocked, when Able advises him that maybe he is living in the wrong place. Still trying to be friendly, the couple invite the Turner’s to their housewarming party, but after Able insults other guests, things really start to get testy. Matters escalate, and the animosity grows, leading to an overly dramatic confrontation at the fence between the properties.

Life gets more complicated, as the Mattson’s discover that Lisa is pregnant, and officer Tuner gets a little too theatrical during an arrest, and then again poolside at the Mattson’s. It is clear that Abel is unstable and driven by an inner demon, and he finally goes too far. As raging brushfires threaten to destroy Lakeside Terrace (where is the lake by the way?), the madness we have all been expecting, is finally unleashed. That the conclusion is overplayed and not very credible, is not a big surprise, but it does keep the film from being really special.

A commentary track by director Neil LaBute (Nurse Betty) and Kerry Washington, is rather thoughtful, mainly accentuating the positives. The film features the Mattson’s almost exclusively in their home, but the deleted scenes feature a few looks at Chris and Lisa on the job, as well as two versions of a confrontation between Abel and Lisa.

Lakeside Terrace builds momentum, and then heads someplace dark. To maintain a PG-13 rating, the level of violence is toned down. Jackson, Washington, and Wilson all give good performances. Able Turner is an exaggerated cartoonish character, and his reasons for resenting his neighbors is perhaps too simplistic, but it is still interesting to see just how twisted matters get, and how others react to him. We may live in enlightened times, where Barack Obama could be elected President, and interracial marriage is commonplace, but not so long ago, such was not the case.

The fast and the Furious Trilogy is one of those series that people try to hide that they like, but the minute someone brings it up they want to be part of the conversation. Altough the first one was great and the second was (I will let you judge) and the third was was cool because it was cool that they introduced the world to drifting, the series has stood the test of time. The new one (aptly named Fast and Furious) brought the series back to wher it belong. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are awesome and the women are beautiful.

Look, we all know the movies are cheese as heck. That’s kind of the fun. Chances are you’ve seen the movies if you’re looking at this though… so I’ll skip that part.

Fact is these movies look AWESOME in HD. The quality is excellent here and they really do look way better on BluRay. I previously owned all moves separately on DVD – so I’ve seen them to compare. If you’re looking at getting all of the movies at some point and have BluRay capability – this is the way to go.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand starts off extremely rocky with a tepid first three episodes. After that the series finds its footing and gets you completely and fully engrossed by the episodes leading up to the finale.

One thing I noticed people are not commenting on is the music. Listen to the music while Spartacus is trying to convince Crixus to join him and find his love or during Spartacus’s final speech in the finale. This music rivals the epic scores of the music moments on my favorite shows like 24 and LOST. I hope they invest more in the score for the second season and really take a step back and look the way it was well-matched particularly in the finale.

I started watching this show by myself and eventually built up a following of a few other friends who would get together and watch it. What drew them in were the characters and the building story -that crackling tension that every episode that passes pushes Spartacus closer and closer to rebellion.

Andy Whitefield as Spartacus and John Hannah as Batiatus both deserve Emmys for their two particularly standout performances. Whitefield was basically unknown in the USA before this and Hannah would probably best be recognized as the goofy brother from The Mummy Series. Here they both give it their all and give extreme depth to their relationship as slave/master and to their characters and the result is tremendous.

Best show people have yet to discover – BOTH RULE – New York, NY
This show is a truly great one. What I’ve noticed is that some may have watched only the first 2 episodes, and didn’t give it a proper chance. The reason I say this is that the first 2 episodes are a pilot, and pretty much offers you only a foundation of what’s to come. There isn’t a real SPARTACUS until episode 5 and if you are watching you won’t be able to take your eyes off it.

The best part of this series coming out on DVD or Blu-ray is that you won’t have to wait until next week to catch the next episode. Trust me. It was quite painful waiting. Since this show was on Starz it didn’t get the total audience it would have if it were on HBO or Showtime, but this show can more than hold its own against any of those network’s greatest shows. Yes, that includes my beloved DEXTER, and my guilty pleasure TRUE BLOOD.

Starz has a winner here. Just like FX has Sons of Anarchy. If you don’t like a well written story with some shocking twists, this show is not for you. If you are not entertained by sex or the naked bodies of beautiful people, then this is not for you. If you can’t handle gore or violence, this is not for you. If you do not enjoy Love stories, or competitive rivalries..this is not for you. If you enjoy any or all of these things, by all means get this series!!

This was one of the best miniseries I have seen.
The acting fantastic and the story was great, kept you wanting to see more.
I think men and women will like it, it is gory, but I loved it.
I thought the scenes were very well done.
Congratulations to the team that made up Spartacus !!

THE MAGICIAN (Ansiktet), directed by Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal, Fanny and Alexander), is an engaging, brilliantly conceived tale of deceit from one of cinema’s premier illusionists. Max von Sydow (The Virgin Spring, The Exorcist) stars as Dr. Vogler, a mid-nineteenth-century traveling mesmerist and peddler of potions whose magic is put to the test by a small town’s cruel, eminently rational minister of health, Dr. Vergerus (Wild Strawberries’ Gunnar Bjornstrand). The result is a diabolically clever battle of wits that’s both frightening and funny, shot in rich, gorgeously gothic black and white.

An underrated film by the master Ingmar Bergman. Part horror, part comedy, part erotic, part
symbolic…it is a movie that should generate a lot of thinking when it is over.

Ostensibly it is a movie about the continuing conflict between faith and science…or reason and art but there are no quick answers. The character of Dr. Vogler may have been influenced by the myth and fact of Rasputin. Even the look is similar; Max Von Sydow is the “perfect choice of actor” in portraying this hypnotist, con-artist, or real magician.

I never had the sense that the “magic” was real, but persons behave as if the illusions were true. After a cynical medical officer humiliates Dr. Vogler, attempts to prove Vogler is nothing but a charlatan, the magician challenges him for a private performance. And in that performance Dr. Vogler dies and comes back to life again…the metaphor of Christ.

The nature of God requires us to keep on questioning. This was a theme in “The Seventh Seal’ and it reappears in this film. Recommended…not as a masterpiece but as an important work of the director.

CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON – Blu-Ray Movie

I upgraded to Blu-ray from my well-worn DVD copy (the 2001 release). I have not seen the previous Blu-ray release that came as part of the three-pack, so my comments below compare the stand-alone Blu-ray to the DVD.

The Blu-ray transfer is a definite improvement over the DVD, though not to the degree of some other transfers I have seen. Much of the film was shot “soft” by Ang Lee to cover for wire-work and, basically, to suit his own taste. Those scenes remain soft on the new transfer. Not much if any of the grain has been removed and it occasionally flares up. So while it doesn’t provide the “digital sharpness” (for a lack of a better phrase) of many recent releases, it does present what the director intended and I don’t list that as a fault.

Black levels have improved and several scenes have had exposure levels altered (all for the better). Coloring remains much the same as the DVD. Most noticeably, the offensive random noise and dirt from the DVD release has been cleaned up. That in itself is a good reason to upgrade.

Sound is now in Dolby TrueHD and emphasizes the clash of swords a bit more but it is no huge improvement. I’ve never listened to the English audio track so I don’t know if that’s changed at all, but the sub-titles have been reworked and that is good news. It seemed easier to follow some of the plot nuances (like the master-pupil concerns) which I had to piece out over several previous viewings of the DVD. Extras are the same with one addition, a commentary track by Peter Pau (cinematographer) which is worth listening to.

Overall this is a definite improvement over DVD and fans should consider buying. I always thought the DVD rushed and beneath Sony for a film that won so many Academy Awards; this is a good step up. Oh, and Michelle Yeoh looks more gorgeous than ever in HD.

A great movie you get drawen into, the fighting is breath takeing and the affects are great.

Many people consider this to be the greatest martial arts film ever made. I’m not a martial arts expert, but I can tell that this is simply a masterpiece. It’s brilliant from beginning to end: the fight scenes, the breathtaking scenery, the haunting music, the realistic sets/buildings, and even the occasional bits of humor. This is not your usual Bruce Lee martial arts flick, where silliness pretty much plays a dominant role in the action. Here the action scenes, as well as the dramatic scenes, are done with beautiful skill and are taken very seriously. Every single actor in this film (Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, Chang Chen, Cheng Pei-pei, etc.) do an extraordinary job, while director Ang Lee tells the story with his own uniquely artistic craft. It’s safe to say that I really like this movie, even if it isn’t really one of my personal favorites. It’s a great film, and it should be required viewing for those who love films made from the East.

Grade: 9.5/10
