THE MAGICIAN (Ansiktet), directed by Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal, Fanny and Alexander), is an engaging, brilliantly conceived tale of deceit from one of cinema’s premier illusionists. Max von Sydow (The Virgin Spring, The Exorcist) stars as Dr. Vogler, a mid-nineteenth-century traveling mesmerist and peddler of potions whose magic is put to the test by a small town’s cruel, eminently rational minister of health, Dr. Vergerus (Wild Strawberries’ Gunnar Bjornstrand). The result is a diabolically clever battle of wits that’s both frightening and funny, shot in rich, gorgeously gothic black and white.
The Magician (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
An underrated film by the master Ingmar Bergman. Part horror, part comedy, part erotic, part
symbolic…it is a movie that should generate a lot of thinking when it is over.
Ostensibly it is a movie about the continuing conflict between faith and science…or reason and art but there are no quick answers. The character of Dr. Vogler may have been influenced by the myth and fact of Rasputin. Even the look is similar; Max Von Sydow is the “perfect choice of actor” in portraying this hypnotist, con-artist, or real magician.
I never had the sense that the “magic” was real, but persons behave as if the illusions were true. After a cynical medical officer humiliates Dr. Vogler, attempts to prove Vogler is nothing but a charlatan, the magician challenges him for a private performance. And in that performance Dr. Vogler dies and comes back to life again…the metaphor of Christ.
The nature of God requires us to keep on questioning. This was a theme in “The Seventh Seal’ and it reappears in this film. Recommended…not as a masterpiece but as an important work of the director.

Dexter is back and more killer than ever. The Emmy-nominated Showtime Original Series (Best Drama Series, Lead Actor in a Drama Series) returns for an all-new season – and this time Dexter’s got a new take on taking life. Having faced some of his darkest demons, Dexter’s ready to put the past behind him. Now, with family life, a day job catching killers and an uncontrollable urge to do away with the ones that get away, Dexter’s got his work cut out for him. And when a high-profile case sides him with powerful Assistant DA Miguel Prado (special guest star JIMMY SMITS), the pressure might be too great for even our beloved Dexter to hack.
Dexter: Seasons One-Four [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
Dexter has got to be one of the best shows on TV. The knowledge and creativity that went in to this show is superb in comparison to what we’re used to seeing on TV. Even though it may offend some people who are a little more sensitive than the normal human, there is no doubt this show is one of the best on TV. It’s 100% original and full of suspense; it actually keeps you looking forward to the next episode. It’s rare for any show to keep me that anxious about watching the next episode, but this show does that.

A dazzling and yet frequently maddening bid to bring the movie musical kicking and screaming into the 21st century, Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge bears no relation to the many previous films set in the famous Parisian nightclub. This may appear to be Paris in the 1890s, with can-can dancers, bohemian denizens like Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo), and ribaldry at every turn, but it’s really Luhrmann’s pop-cultural wonderland. Everyone and everything is encouraged to shatter boundaries of time and texture, colliding and careening in a fast-cutting frenzy that thinks nothing of casting Elton John’s “Your Song” 80 years before its time. Nothing is original in this kaleidoscopic, absinthe-inspired love tragedy–the words, the music, it’s all been heard before. But when filtered through Luhrmann’s love for pop songs and timeless showmanship, you’re reminded of the cinema’s power to renew itself while paying homage to its past.
Luhrmann’s overall success with his third “red-curtain” extravaganza (following Strictly Ballroom and William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet) is wildly debatable: the scenario is simple to the point of silliness, and how can you appreciate choreography when it’s been diced into hash by attention-deficit editing? Still, there’s something genuine brewing between costars Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman (as, respectively, a poor writer and his unobtainable object of desire), and their vocal talents are impressive enough to match Luhrmann’s orgy of extraordinary sets, costumes, and digital wizardry. The movie’s novelty may wear thin, along with its shallow indulgence of a marketable soundtrack, but Luhrmann’s inventiveness yields moments that border on ecstasy, when sound and vision point the way to a moribund genre’s joyously welcomed revival. –Jeff Shannon
Moulin Rouge! [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
i’m not by any means a girly girl. i am all for blood and horror and i dont often like chic flicks. but this movie grabs me by my heart and throws me around the room. heck, i dont even like nicole kidman that much but she plays her part well in this movie. Ewan McGregor makes me fall in love with him every time he sings. and those big eyes set fire to my soul.
this movie isnt much liked by most people. i dont understand why. its artistic, funny, romantic and tragic. it has become a very important movie in my life. it has a lot of emotional value that you might miss if you dont open your heart to it. and if you miss it then its just a shame.
i recomomend popping it in your DVD playing for a romantic evening by candle light.
Amaing Movie – Jonthomasdesigns – Amherst ,MA
Ok i will admit the first 1/2 hour is wire wind .. but after that it becomes clear this is a amazing movie .. the visuals are amazing and the story is heart warming and heart breaking at the same time .. it is why we watch movies .. it is worth watching 3 or 4 times
Great even after the 20th time! – JHH –
Loved this movie! Loved the music, the singing, the colors! This movie made me laugh and made me cry. I can watch it back to back (like what cable TV does) and still enjoy it every single time!
a joke – eswan –
After seeing a costume layout of this movie in Vogue with Nicole, I awaited this movie with great anticipation. Well, I hated it. It’s dizzyingly fast paced, ridiculous and totally mixed up. It seemed like they couldn’t decide what they wanted this film to be. I couldn’t focus on a single frame as each only lasted a split second. The only good thing is that Nicole can actually sing and she looked beautiful, when you could focus on her.
If this movie were an outfit, it would look like someone reached into the closet – blind-folded – and put on whatever was pulled out.
I walked out half-way through and asked for a refund.

Arn: The Knight Templar (Ac3 Dts) [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
Audio: Swedish
Subtitles: Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian
This is a Region 2 DVD. But it’s such a great movie that it’s worth the extra cost of buying a region-free DVD Player. If you don’t already own one, get one so you can watch this great movie.
No English subtitles, though.
Here’s my product review (in English and Swedish):
(English)
Arn, the son of a high-ranking Swedish nobleman is educated in a monastery and sent to the Holy Land as a knight templar to do penance for a forbidden love.
