  • If you have to see a realistic and horrifically depressing film with great performances – this is it. This tragedy set in a prison community in the racist south is chock full of surprises and shockers. Thornton’s three generational family is a conflictual mess with varying degrees of vicious racism and mental illness. Halle Berry’s family fares no better with tremendous loss of everything and everyone in her life. When the two finally meet, there is a sort of acceptance and redemption on both parts, but its terribly painful to watch. Heath Ledger plays Thornton’s more sensitive son in an underplayed role. Halle Berry bares her soul and her body with a worthiness Oscar rewarded, only to see her disappear into the “X-Men” again! Berry and Thornton have a torrid sex scene that is barely cut only to have him wake up in the morning with his underwear on – only in America!

Now in this blu-ray edition, the colors, crispness and sound is impeccable. The sound is in DTS 5.1 and extras include, Audio Commentary with Director and Writers, four deleted scenes, the featurettes of `On the set’, `Behind the scenes with the producer’, cast and crew interviews, music for the film and the theatrical trailer.

EXCELLENT MOVIE – Kyshawn Dean – New York City
NOW I SEE HOW HALLE WON AN OSCAR FOR THE MOVIE.SHE WAS EVERYTHING AN ACTRESS SHOULD BE IN A ROLE WHICH IS DRAMATIC,CONVINCING,SEXY AND MAKE YOU THINK DURING THE MOVIE. That love scene was the most passionate, realistic act I’ve ever seen in a movie. A must see for all.

  • Crash [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • When I think of the top five most inspiring scenes from any movie, tv show, or play, “Crash” holds scenes one, three, and four. Watching this movie made me think, ponder, and almost cry. When I wondered how Crash could have so many amazing scenes, one after another, I thought, “Most movies only have one storyline that leads up to a climactic moment. This movie has at least six storylines, each weaving in and out of each other, each one affecting the others, and each one with its own personal climactic moment.” The minute details that Paul Haggis is able to tie together makes me as an amateur script writer to feel the need to push my creativity and creativeness to new heights.
Critics of this film complain that the storyline is atrocious, and that the dialogue does not make sense, and that the characters are just unrelatable stereotypes of each ethnicity. As for the storyline, I cannot see any flaws in it whatsoever. I may sound ignorant for it, but every step of the story lead me to another twist, another suprise. Whenever I walk out of a movie, it is just my nature to ask myself “What were the loose-ends? What didn’t make sense? Did everything come together to form the ending, or were some tangents just left half done, as if the director hoped the audience wouldn’t notice?” Crash had no such cliffhangers. Somehow, Haggins brought this huge cast of utterly different characers together in a smooth and fluid way.
I can see some reasons to critics complaining about the dialogue. Crash is not spoken in an everyday way, the dialogue is dramatic, deep, and maybe a little too poetic for the characters that say them. However, this movie isn’t supposed to just portray everyday life. It’s supposed to portray every little thought that a person has, all of the terrible and hurtful things that we swallow every time we see a person of a different race. So the dialogue may be cheesy, but sometimes are minds are cheesy. Few moviegoers realize that our mind first reacts to situations in the most dramatic, beautiful way possible. Crash is trying to show that first burst of pure thought in our mind through each character.
Finally, people need to stop complaining about how the characters are “too stereotypical”. Everyone, realize that these characters are not supposed to be real people. They are all sympols for each race! They are typical black men, or white woman, or asian drivers, or mexican gang bangers, blown completely out of real world proportions. These characters arent supposed to be real people, they are our inner beings, screaming racist and prejudice comments about anyone we see, judging them immediatly. Obviously, people in the real world have a filter, and don’t interact with other people like the characters in the movie do. But Crash is trying to show what would happen if we just got rid of that filter, and if everything was just judged by race. That is why this movie is a success.

A Total Crock – Jerry A. Estes – Jackson, LA USA
What a total crock of pure unadulterated doggy doo!!!!! This movie has no decernable plot. It’s supposedly about white racism in Los Angles but all I saw was black racism toward whites. The movie supposedly stars Sandra Bullock, however, she is only seen four times, for a total of maybe 10 minutes during the entire movie. She must be getting hard up for parts. I didn’t recognize any of the other so called actors or actresses. Don’t waste your money on this movie.

Love it! – Kim – Boise, ID
I am very happy with my purchase. I really liked this movie when I saw it in theaters and am glad to have it as my own now.

    Crash – Val – garmany

Lots of skin – Terrence N. Tallman – Whidbey Island, Washington State
How on earth they got Jessica Alba in this thing is beyond me. I am a guy and enjoyed the skin but feel Alba was the only thing that let this thing float just above the trash…barely.

good luck chuck – Larry Suttles –
this is a good movie but the dvd that i ordered is has a deep scratch in it and stops a few minutes into the movie you have to forward to the next scene to get the movie going again so you miss some of the movie.

one of the worst movies i’ve ever seen – KAM – Concord, New Hampshire
first off, i don’t understand why or how dane cook became so successful. there is nothing funny about him. he doesn’t tell jokes – he relates “stories” with very animated facial and physical gestures. and, often, looks like a monkey. dan fogler, too, is quite possibly the most annoying human being on the planet… especially his character in this movie. he is a disgusting, misogynistic pig. i would love for lionsgate to make “hostel III” starring dane cook and dan fogler – that would be a movie i would pay to see twice. now, on to the movie itself: the concept is ludicrous and makes absolutely no sense. seriously, this film must have been written by and made for people with nonexistent IQ’s… because anybody that can tie their own shoes would realize how absurd this movie is and would never plunk down for this piece of cinematic tripe. to even suggest that hundreds of beautiful women could never find a decent man on their own, and would have to resort to sleeping with a d-bag like dane cook to find a husband, is an offense to women everywhere. this movie is so incredibly misogynistic… where women are depicted as clueless, desperate pieces of “t+a”… that even i, a man and non-feminist, was offended by it. and we’re supposed to like this schmuck because he agrees to sleep with his overweight secretary out of the goodness of his heart and says, “i’ll only think of you (when we have sex).” please. please, please, please, if there is any justice in the world this movie will make at the box office and garbage like this will STOP BEING MADE! this movie is not funny – it is an insult to anyone with a brain or a heart. just see “knocked up” or “superbad” instead, to see how to actually make a comedy that is both hilarious and heartfelt.

  • Captain Sam Cahill (Maguire) is embarking on his fourth tour of duty, leaving behind his beloved wife (Portman) and two daughters. When Sam’s Blackhawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains of Afghanistan, the worst is presumed, leaving an enormous void in the family. Despite a dark history, Sam’s charismatic younger brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal) steps in to fill the family void.

  • Brothers [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Please note: This review is for the Blu-ray edition of the film.

After his capture by members of the Taliban in Afganistan, Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Macguire)returns a broken man by his experiences after being forced to commit a heinous act while a captive and suspicious that his brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhall)who has helped to hold the family together when they believed he was dead has had an affair with Grace (Natalie Portman)Sam’s wife. Tommy an ex-con who is trying to get his life together faces ridicule from his father (Sam Shepherd) for his failures but earns his dad’s respect when he spontaneously remodels Grace’s kitchen. Haunted by his experiences, suffering from paranoia, Sam finds it difficult to settle back into the life he once occupied.

A remake of a 2004 Danish film “Brødre” which originally starred Connie Nielsen (“Gladiator”), Jim Sheridan’s powerful drama retains the plot and dynamics of the original film while adding a dramatic nuance unique for American audiences. While it doesn’t quite measure up to the original Danish film which has a plot twist that is missing here that adds power to the conflict between the brothers, Sheridan’s film hits most of the right notes and is rarely off key.The performances from each of the actors adds to the film with the lead actors giving strong multi-layered performances. The screenplay by writer David Benioff (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, “The Kite Runner”, “Stay” and “Troy”)feels authentic but the removal of one major plot twist does rob this film of some of its complexity.

The Blu-ray has a sharp, beautiful looking transfer and nicely capturing the lovely Santa Fe landscape. We get an intelligent commentary track with director Jim Sheridan discussing what captivated him about the original drama and his own approach to the material; we also get a trio of featurettes on the production including one that focuses on translating the original film for an American audience without losing the essence of what made the original “Brødre” so powerful.

“Brothers” may not work as well as the original film due to some changes to the plot of the film but the performances and direction ring so true that one can forgive the change and its impact on this drama. Each film is uniquely powerful and Sheridan’s “Brothers” gets more right than wrong and is well worth watching.

A complaint about the Blu-ray (and maybe this applies to the DVD as well I don’t know) but I find it ANNOYING when I have to wade through previews and an advertisement for Blu-ray to get to the main menu so I can watch the film. It’s unfriendly authoring and not well done. It’s also a tactic that other studios are using and it’s NOT consumer friendly (not that they have ever cared about that). If you buy (or rent) a disc you should be able to bypass all of this junk and NOT waste your time waiting for the film to start. Blu-ray menus that use Java (which this does) were originally designed so you could just jump to the menu and choose what you want to watch. Lion’s Gate this is how you should be authoring these.

Excellent cast and awesome story! – Jess D. Ruehling – Franklin County TN
It’s very rare to have a new movie now a days with this much impact. The casting was perfect…down to the little kids. I would totally recommend this movie to anybody. Even kids, despite the fact it does contain some bad language. I think the youth of America could benefit from a film like this. 5 stars, all the way around!

Did NOT like this movie at all! – –
I had really big expectations of this movie, based on the “explosive emotional” tv trailers and commercials….shoulda just stuck with that. Tobey was very robotic and unconvincing as a “loving Dad” BEFORE he was deployed again. There didn’t seem to be any chemistry with him as a Dad. I felt overall the acting was forced and didn’t evoke any real emotions. I am very sensitive to emotional movies and this really didn’t do it for. (Hey, I cried in CARS when Lightning pushed The King over the finish line!). The movie had lots of cliche type cheese (so bring the Triscuits!). The movie was (for me) disconnected on many levels and cold heartless acting all around…except the little girl. The ending was a big let down too and it seemed that there could have been lots more to do with it then what was done. Golden Globe worthy? I think not.

  • America’s favorite pot-dealing soccer mom is more addictive than ever in the third season of WEEDS, the highly acclaimed Showtime(r) Original Series. Emmy (r) and Golden Globe(r) winner MARY-LOUISE PARKER stars as Nancy Botwin, a single mom who resorts to dealing pot after her husband dies suddenly. But when an off beat way to make ends meet grows into a mini-empire, the mother of all dealers finds she may be in over her head – and on the verge of taking everyone else with her. Hilarious and subversive, WEEDS is the hit that put the herb in suburb.

  • Weeds – Season Three [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers
  • Showtime’s “Weeds” continues its comic savaging of Suburbia with Season 3. This new season opens with the resolution of Season 2′s definitive cliff-hanger – a Mexican standoff with all the guns pointed at Nancy Botwin, America’s favorite amateur pot dealer.

Season 3 sees the Widow Botwin and her extended family of misfits, fools, and noblemen plunge even deeper into the maelstrom of having everything you’ve worked for ripped asunder. Whether it’s losing a beloved spouse, saying good-bye to a cherished job, or even leaving a loveless-but-comfortable marriage, everyone in Season 3 seems to be losing something . . . and we’re not talking just a few toes here.

Through it all, Ms. Botwin soldiers on with her unique combination of bravado, naivete, and occasional ruthlessness. If you’re a fan of “Weeds,” Season 3 offers more of the same – extremely funny dialogue, rampant and bizarre sexual affairs, the occasional spot of violence, and plot developments so “out there” that they work. You have to go down the rabbit hole to appreciate “Weeds,” (how else can you appreciate Kevin Nealon as a stoned-yet-effective city magistrate?) but once you’re there, you’re there to stay.

BD format review, not Weeds – M. Riedel – midwestern U.S.
okay, I got in to Weeds on a recommendation from a friend…I am totally addicted. This review is not about the show but, about the format. I went with Blu-ray format so I could check it out on my new LED television and BD player. I am a bit disappointed in the quality – it is little better than a standard DVD that has been up-converted. I was able to get seasons 1-3 on sale at Amazon for same price as the regular DVD so, at least I didn’t over-pay. But, if I had shelled out the full-price, I would be upset about it. If you can get it on sale, go for it. But, don’t expect a lot of WOW factor.

3 seasons and still very funny – Rudy James Jr. – Pleasantville, NJ United States
I really love this show. The third season is just as good as the first. The writer’s are doing a great job in keeping the seris fresh and funny. Now I have to say I first liked the show because I think Nancy is one very very hot lady but now I watch it for that reason and a lot more. Everyone does a great job playing their roles. You will not regret buying this show.
