This is a very good movie, but I wouldn’t call it a different kind of Western, as many reviewers have. If Westerns come in two varieties; traditional and revisionist, this one falls into the second category. For the most part, only revisionist Westerns have been made for the last few decades, so this film fits comfortably with No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, and myriad others.
It is well acted and suspenseful, but with no character worth the slightest empathy. The screenplay could use some work on transitions, especially in the beginning, but this isn’t a major flaw. The cinematography is very good, but at times it tries too hard to be artsy.
The Proposition is probably one of the better unknown films. It’s unknown, or at least not well known, because it’s Australian and dark as hell. If you like revisionist Westerns with outlaw antiheroes and lots of bloody violence, then you’ll enjoy The Proposition.

The Bottom Line:
All the best westerns are about the nature of order and justice and The Proposition, while set in the Australian outback rather than the old west, understands this completely and probes these themes well; a film of exceptional (albeit never gratuitous) violence but also one which generates many wonderfully quiet moments with Ray Winstone (good as ever) and his wife Emma Watson, this is quite a little movie.

I don’t mind violence, but the director of this movie must have been insane at the time this movie was shot. It is incomprehensible. I cannot say one good thing about this trashy movie. The “Blu-ray” video quality was no better. The story (what story?) sucked as did the acting. Don’t waste your money!

Focuses too much on the sheriff and his wife, the story should be about the relationship between these brothers.
