  • 40 years ago, Don Haskins went on the recruiting trail to find the best talent in the land, black or white. 7 blacks and 5 whites made up the legendary 1965-66 Texas Western Miners. They were mocked and ridiculed for their showboating and flaunting of black players on the court. Yet, in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, Haskins and his Miners came together as a team united to reach the National Championship game against powerhouse Kentucky. This movie is a stand-up-and-cheer basketball tale taken from real life. “Glory Road is a very satisfying movie.

A Milepost in Basketball History – J. Settle – Tennessee
Glory Road is a milepost in Basketball History. It demonstrates the desire to win in a coach that was willing to go after the best basketball players regardless of skin color in order to have a chance to win the NCAA.

Glory Road – Linny L – western Canada
A wonderful story about how great leadership inspires others and the ability of the human spirit to triumph over adversity. A true story to inspire people to overcome the prejudice of others and reach their true potential.

    Powerful – Carl Mickens –
This is base off a true story, It’s powerful. I really enjoyed this movie, it’s a disney movie BUT it’s way more serious than you think. Black athletes didn’t have that many opportunities back then, one coach decides to start 5 African Americans at the national championship. It shows how racism is stupid and color doesn’t matter when it come to sports. It’s the remember of the titans of basketball!

The year is 1971. Afterleading his team to 15 winning seasons, football coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton) is demoted and replaced by Herman Boone (Washington), tough, opinionated, and as different from the beloved Yoast as hecould be. How these two men overcome their differences and turn a group of hostile young men into champions, plays out in a remarkable and triumphantstory full of soul and spirit. You and your family will never forget the Titans.

  • Okay, I have kind of dogged a few of the films in this genre over the years. That whole `by the book inspirational sports movie’ is just so generic and clichéd and familiar that I can’t help but roll my eyes every time I see a trailer for another `Glory Road’ or `Miracle’. I mean, they are all THE SAME.

That said, this was one of the films that started the up-rise in the genre (at least this decade) and it remains one of the (if not THE) best.

I’ve said my piece about Denzel Washington before. He is one of those actors that I really like at times but find highly overrated a lot of the time. Some of his best work (`Malcolm X’ aside) never gets attention, yet his more mediocre work nabs all the accolades (no one will ever convince me that his borderline bore-inducing work in `American Gangster’ or his ham-fest in `Training Day’ is anywhere near as revolutionary as his stunning work in `He Got Game’ or his superb character development in `Man on Fire’). This performance, while not his finest hour, is highly appropriate and beautifully understated.

    He truly UNDERSTANDS this character.

Set in Virginia, in 1971, the film tells (the true story) of a black coaches struggle to unite his football team during the integration of black students into a white school. The racial tension is used to perfection here, as apposed to making it a gimmick (so many films try TOO HARD in this area). You can feel the prejudice stripping away, and you feel swells of uplifting power as the emotional gravity of the film overtakes you.

This is one of those rare occasions where the inspirational sports movie is actually `inspirational’.

You may know who Ryan Gosling, Donald Faison, Kip Pardue, Hayden Panettiere and Kate Bosworth are now, but I guarantee you that in 2000 they were fresh (and nameless) faces. They all make an impact here (especially Gosling, who was always a star in my book), and they help fill out an exceptional cast of young stars. Thankfully, Washington holds his own, but never becomes an overwhelming presence. He allows this film to remain about the students, which is admirable. Will Patton also delivers a beautifully understated performance as the reluctant Coach Bill Yoast.

I thank my sister (and her husband) for pressuring me into finally watching this movie. I was adamant about resisting this film, but peer pressure got to the best of me and I conceded, and I am so happy for that. You know me. I am not a huge fan of this genre. Yes, I thought `Rocky’ was an overrated mess and I didn’t find `Rudy’ to be the uplifting epic so many claim it to be. I love this movie.

    Go figure.

Remember the Titans Blue Ray DVD – Carolyn J. Allen – Farmington, Missouri, USA
The order from Amazon arrived quickly, was in excellent condition and very much appreciated by a special boy on Christmas. Thank you!

One of the Best – Seung T. Kim – Wilmington, NC
Remember the Titans is a great movie. It is heartwarming to see the coming together of a town separated by segregation. The town is brought together when the schools white football team is joined by a black football team from a different school. The two teams do not get along at first but when they go away for training camp, they become one as they mesh together. This movie is great to watch because of the touching message and the heart breaking end.

If you want action this movie has some serious action. Will you have to fast forward a bunch to get to it? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes, great action.

If you want a great and unique love story this movie has it. Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett play best buddy airmen who vie for the same women’s (Kate Beckinsale) affection. Without giving too much away through a strange twist of fate they both end up with the girl at different times and it seems like everything is falling apart when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. From then on out the movie takes a quick detour from Romance to Action and does so abruptly and amazingly. This movie makes you feel like you are there at one of the most horrific days of American history. The buddies of course must work together to save their friends and in doing so reach an understanding with one another before they both have to leave the girl they love to attack Japan with none other than General James Doolittle.

In the end this becomes a very touching thought out story that I enjoyed tremendously. There are a few side stories that seem forced, but overall the cast is fun and the story is excellent. The Blu-ray is excellent for both sound and picture.

Too long, love story was stupid – B. Kennedy – San Diego
Baisically the movie was too long and the love story was tacked on and unnecessary. My grandfather was at Pearl Harbor (bugler West Virginia), he talked about it all the time, he saw the movie and he agreed with me. He liked the battle scenes, but thought the love story was dumb too. I think we both wanted (and I’m sure I’m not alone on this one) an updated version of “Tora, Tora, Tora” I think Michael Bay would have been better off doing that, and having the Doolittle raid at the end rather than the lame love story. Make it more like “Saving Private Ryan” and less like “the Notebook” It was supposed to be a war movie not a chick flick! Oh well it is what it is.

See this is why we should be able to go to negitive stars! – Bonnie Ciafre – Lansdowne, PA United States
It dosn’t matter what they do with this movie. Unless they burn all of them it will still be the worst historical play on a US tradgity ever made. People who like this hours and hours of tripe really need to think about they’re lives. You can’t be to intellegent if this cast seems to good, or fair or the story is realistic to you. This is one of the worst movies I had to sit through. This movie drags, the story is false and could be more fake(the pathetic love story) and the lousy acting all make this a terrible movie. My one star dosn’t even account the this takes three and half hours of your life. I would give this negitive five stars! And counting the two days worth of additional footage it should be banned! The cast should never work again for this.

    DARK WATER

This American film based on Hideo Nakata’s original movie [which was based on a book so it may not be completely original] is actually a lot better than most American remakes of Asian horror cinema. The first time I watched this movie I was expecting something along the lines of “The Ring” or maybe the “The Grudge” but was pleasantly surprised when this one seemed more surreal. It does an excellent job with the characters and makes the story seem very believable. I had a good time with this one when with others I was really not much of a fan.

Dahlia and her daughter Cecelia are looking for a new apartment on Roosevelt Island in New York City, Cecelia needs to live close to a good school it seems. Dahlia has a new job and at the same time is going through a divorce with a husband that does not trust her judgment. Once they find a place strange things start to happen like a constant water leak that is in her daughter’s room. Also add in the strange noises coming from the place above her place and you have a cool little film a brewing. Of course you can’t forget that this is a mystery/ghost story at heart.

Director Walter Salles does a nice job in letting the story tell its self instead of pushing things along at a fast pace. He also elects to let the characters build on them selves and actually develop, that seems rare now a days. Also writer Rafael Yglesias [also a writer on the Johnny Depp flick "From Hell] did a nice job in this American version. To be completely honest with you I was not expecting a ghost story like this one from this one. I really felt that it would look like every other remake that has come out since “The Ring”.

The thing that really makes this film interesting is the acting from this top notch cast, every one did a good job on this one. Jennifer Connelly is great as Dahlia Williams and makes the character seem like an actual person. Her daughter is played by Ariel Gade who like Jennifer does a great job which is rare for child actors, especially in this type of film. Of course the ever excellent Tim Roth is brilliant in this film as a lawyer who actually comes to this lady’s aid when she needs it. John C. Reilly may steal the show some what as the shady land lord who always makes a promise he can not keep. Dougray Scott, Pete Postlethwaite, and Camryn Manheim all also give excellent performances.

As the film goes on it goes from being about pesky neighbors to a ghost story to a crime mystery and it still manages to feel like the same film. This is not the best movie ever and may not be for every body but it definitely will appeal to some. I would recommend this one to any fan of mystery films or ghost stories. By the way the ending to this is excellent.

Deep Dark Water – Galina – Virginia, USA
Dark Water, the first English language movie directed by Brazilian Walter Salles (Central Station, Motorcycle Diaries) is a very good movie. This is the type of intelligent non-slasher horror films that I enjoy. Its power is not in showing gore and roaring monsters but in the creating the atmosphere of unbearable tension and in making the very familiar everyday things and situations ominous, gloomy, and ready to hurt. Dark Water is also about very real and sympathetic characters, a young single mother and her little girl, and the bond and love between them. It is about real monsters of abuse, negligence, and criminal indifference that could and would affect a child’s future life and lead to the tragic event at some point. I did not see the original Japanese movie of which Dark Water is a remake but I found this remake set in the creepiest apartment building on the Roosevelt Island, NY imaginable, a very underrated, good on its own merits and certainly worth watching drama/psychological thriller with the elements of supernatural thriller. Acting is first class. Jennifer Connelly in a truly heartbreaking performance as a recently divorced woman trying to move on together with her little daughter deserves a special mention and respect. John C. Reilly, Tim Roth, Pete Postlethwait, and Dougray Scott all made their characters interesting and memorable. It was nice to see Camryn Manheim in a small cameo. Two young girls also were very good. The camera work by Alfonso Beato, who more recently shot the award winning films “All About My Mother” (1999) “Ghost World” (2001), “The Queen” (2006), and “Love in the Time of Cholera” is amazing. The apartment where Dahlia and Cecil moved, had a strong and scary personality, and could be consider another very important film’s character. If I add that the original music to the film was written by Angelo Badalamenti, the usual David Lynch’s collaborator, you’d have a good idea of the surreal dark atmosphere of the film. I recommend it but do not expect a pure horror flick. Dark Water is deeper than that.

Same old, same old it deserves 0 stars – gamefkdup – Quebec, CA
This is by far one of the worst movies I have ever seen and is definetly the worst in it’s genre (I think supense, psychological thriller) or at least that’s what it’s supposed to be. Suspense yeah right, I was digging through my eyeballs trying to stay awake! Let me sum it up, the story sucks, the plot sucks, the action, well there was none. I’ll admit this movie did have something going for it, I like the actress & the trailer was intriguing but that’s it, after the first 20 minutes you already know it’s going to be a disaster & it was, what a HUGE disapointment! It felt like a VERY cheap rip off of The Ring. Basically as I said it’s the worse in it’s genre, worst than The Grudge, worst than [...], worst than The Skeleton Key (yes, it really is that bad) you name it & it’s better than this. Don’t waste your money on this nobody liked it, it’s JUNK!
